Why Are Lead Paint & Lead Hazards a Problem

Lead paint is common in older homes, schools, and daycare facilities because it was once considered a “wonder coating,” valued for its strength, chemical and water resistance, availability, and low cost. Lead poisoning is a completely preventable childhood disease. Lead paint, coatings, and plumbing can produce dust when disturbed by renovation, friction, or other factors. Most children are poisoned by ingesting invisible lead dust.

Unplanned or improper disturbance of lead paint during repair, renovation, or painting can spread invisible lead contaminants throughout a home or school. Identifying lead hazards requires a licensed and independent expert who can properly design lead abatement or lead-safe renovation plans. In older buildings, lead abatement or renovation projects can also affect other hazardous materials that may be present, such as mold and asbestos.

Home testing kits are not permitted for use by licensed lead inspectors, as their results are less accurate and sensitive than the laboratory analysis methods used by professionals.
