Why Is Lead Paint & Lead Hazards A Problem:

Lead paint occurs in older homes, schools and day care facilities as it was a wonder coating used in many building paints and coating for its strength, chemical and water resistance, availability and cheap cost. Lead poisoning is a totally preventable childhood disease. Lead paint, coatings and plumbing can create dust when disturbed by renovation, due to building component binding / friction and due to other factors. Most children are poisoned by ingesting invisible lead dust. Unplanned and improper lead paint disturbance from repair, renovation or painting can lead to the dissemination of invisible lead contaminants throughout a home or school. It requires a licensed and independent expert to identify lead conditions and hazards and properly design lead abatement / lead safe renovation plans. Further, in older buildings lead abatement /renovation projects can typically adversely impact other hazardous materials that may be present such as mold and asbestos materials. Over time the amount of lead allowed in a child’s blood and in a child’s home or school has decreased dramatically as the serious health effects have been better understood. Home testing kits are not allowed to be used by licensed lead inspectors as their results are not as accurate or sensitive as laboratory analysis methods that inspectors use. Even before laboratory results are in, we can help you identify lead hazards such as in peeling, flaking lead paint, binding / friction of lead paint, interior dust, soil in play and garden areas and lead in drinking water and help educate you on low / no cost strategies to immediately reduce / eliminate these sources. With proper identification of the lead hazard, exposure does not need to result in permanent health effects.
